Pros & Cons of Bachmann Spirit of Christmas Train Set ?
Okay……as a baby boomer, I haven’t touched any model trains in a number of years
Maybe it’s a second childhood but I suddenly wanted a small Christmas train set for limited table top use
I vacillated between the Bachmann N gauge Spirit of Christmas Set & the Bachmann HO gauge DeWitt Clinton Train Set.
They were both on sale and the Spirit of Christmas Train Set cost $ 30 more than the Dewitt Clinton Train Set
I opted for the Spirit of Christmas Train Set
What are the pros & cons of the Spirit of Christmas Train Set ?
If you had to choose between the above 2 sets, which set would you pick and why ?
BTW – The Bachmann Spirit of Christmas N gauge Train Set cost me $ 90
Is that a ‘ good ‘ or ‘ fair ‘ price for it ?
I’ve seen them advertised especially around the holidays.
I would of went with the HO scale since there’s more accessories available.
Without knowing what exactly came with the kit it’s hard to say if $90 was overpriced.
I like you got back into trains a few years ago and basically bought a whole new setup. I built a platform then bought a new hi-powered transformer, lots of cars, multiple locomotives, tons of model buildings, trees, tunnels, people, cars, etc.
Then it got to be a pain setting it up each season, keeping the dog off it, taking it down, etc.
Maybe this year I’ll try again.
Good Luck, they’re fun to have and there’s plenty of resources available on-line.
One thing I’m trying to find with no luck is a pre-built platform in HO scale. I got it for Christmas when I was about 8 yo. It was about 4′ x 5′ .Flex track was attached and it was a two level setup with a long tunnel. The scenery and hills, tunnels were made from a sturdy plastic type material. The base was like a pressed cardboard but very sturdy. All the scenery was painted. It was a great setup, you could pull it out of the basement, attach the transformer to the track and be up and running in a couple minutes. It couldn’t of weighed more than a few pounds. My parents bought it at one of the local hobby stores. It would be the perfect setup for boomers trying to re-capture their childhood.

The Famous Christmas Train The Polar Express
The Polar Express Christmas story train lifts the spirits of most people at Christmas time. And what is even better is putting together your very own Christmas train set. For the few who are unaware. A wonderful Christmas story was written around the Famous Polar Express sometime back around 1985. In 2004 this book was turned into an animated movie that does a wonderful job of warming the hearts families to this very day.
We owe special thanks to one of the best model train manufactures for making reproductions of this treasured Christmas Train. Lionel has made reproductions in painstaking detail.
Some think it is just not Christmas without a good Christmas story for the family. Thanks to Lionel’s tribute to the movie “The Polar Express” you can feel the whistle blast warning the family ol’ Ralphie is on his way to save Christmas aboard the Polar Express. The very powerful 0-8-0 steam locomotive roars down the tracks hauling the colorful freight cars in tow billowing puffs smoke.
The model trains have become a very popular attraction over the years. You can find them in different scale versions. The most popular is the HO model scale because of the precision used in detail not to mention the durability.
The N scale Polar Express train set is the smallest of model trains manufactured in the industry. Small is the order of the day at 1:160th of the original size means that these models make great displays because they will fit just about anywhere because of their small size. Favored by model railroaders Lionel is the top brand because of their quality and attention to detail.
There are other model train manufactures that build reproductions of the Polar Express and Tinplate Christmas trains. Two other top makers Athearn and Bachmann also make quality reproductions of the Christmas trains in all the popular N, G and O gauge model trains.
The O gauge scale model train has been with us for more than one hundred years. The top maker Lionel along with Bachmann, MTH and Norscot have model reproductions in the O gauge which it about twice the size of the N gauge HO models. Being much larger in size the setup and track layouts are simple to construct. The Christmas trains “Polar Express”, “Old Tinplate” along with “Thomas and Friends” are available in wide variety. Available with very realistic sounds with passenger cars, the chocolate car, tenders and the Caboose the variety is sure to please the most discerning tastes.
Another interesting version is the G gauge or G scale sometimes referred to as the “Garden Scale” because it is larger and can be used outside. Advanced railroaders along with the beginners all love the G scale model trains if they have to space to set one up. The detail and quality is truly a sight to behold for people of all ages.
