Model railroading as a hobby is rated second to none. Building a replica of some of the famous old railroads can be very gratifying. Serious railroaders in fact say that the amount of work putting together a layout never ends. You could be at it for years and years.

There are trains available in the market for all kind of levels and budgets. You could be a beginner just wanting to build your first railroad or you could be a serious hobbyist who demands much more complexity and sophistication in the design.

The railroader uses the term “scale” to define the size of the model train. A scale is the ratio of the model train to the original.

Different alphabets mean different scales. For example the O scale means that the model is 1/48th the sixe of the original train. The HO scale model – one of the more popular models among hobbyists is “Half of O”. This model is half the size of an O model.

The O and HO models are relatively large sized and you would need a lot of room to put up a model railroad. Among model railroading hobbyists the popularity of N Scale model train is just after the HO scale. The N scale model train is half the size of the HO scale.

The advantage here is that if you have comparatively less space to put up your model railroad, the N scale will fit your needs. In fact in some countries where people have smaller living spaces, N scale model trains are the most popular!

Though smaller than the HO scale, the N scale model train is comparatively much bigger than even smaller scales like Z and T. The T scale for instance is 1/450th of the original prototype.

Though considered small by many hobbyists, the N scale model scores high over more smaller versions because of detail and design incorporated in them.

N scales are just one of the different sizes available. Whatever scale you choose will depend on what you think is best for you according to your circumstance and budget.

If you are new to this wonderful world of model trains, do not get confused by all the different models you can choose from. Remember there are models available to suit every budget.
