Rhyl is a seaside town in Denbighshire found in northeast Wales. Rhyl is quite popular with tourists as it is right next to the Irish Sea and has excellent transportation. The town changed significantly after the Second World War as visitors from Manchester and Liverpool crowded the town. This once elegant Victorian resort declined significantly by 1990 but has attempted to reinvent itself. Rhyl has managed to secure millions from European funding to develop its seafront are.
The most famous spot in Rhyl is the Pavilion, which was demolished in the 1970s. it was a very ornate building that had five domes. Since the destruction the Sky Tower standing at 250 feet and Rhyl children’s village are both popular. The SeaQuarium and Suncentre can be found on the east parade. The Suncentre has an indoor swimming pool, indoor monorail and Europe’s first indoor surfing pool. There are many shops along the sea front and the Carneddau Mountains can be seen in the distance.
Marine Lake was once a hot spot for tourists but all that remains today is the Rhyl miniature railway. This narrow gauge railway travels around the lake and can be visited form the museum and railway center. In the 1960s Marine Lake was replaced with the Ocean Beach Fun fair and this closed in 2007. Ocean Plaza is currently being developed in this spot and will include retail outlets, a hotel, a supermarket and apartments.
Much of the new building and restoration is due to the regeneration project. The project is to increase the tourism in the area and over 85 million pounds has gone into the construction of Ocean Plaza. Rhyl College has also received funds to rebuild and additional projects include the miniature railway around Marine Lake, and Drift Park. The inhabitants hope to build their town back into the popular seaside resort town it once was in the past.
