Any battery indicator circuit for 6V?

I intend to build a small model railroad that will operate on four AA batteries. It needs to operate at a specific speed (train motion is controlled by a DPDT switch) so I would like to know if there is anything I can add to the circuit that will, for instance, light an LED when the batteries start to die.

Pick a cuttoff voltage, say 4 volts. Then build a comparator circuit with a zener reference that will turn on what the battery voltage drops below that number, and lights a LED.

Of course at some point, as the battery dies further, there will not be enough voltage to operate the comparator or light the LED, so it won’t be very useful.

Better would be a LED that is on as long as the voltage is ABOVE a set point such as 4 volts.
