Model Railway Trains – A Guide To Getting Started

Many people are interested in getting involved with model trains as a hobby but they do not know where to begin. There are several basic things that will assist a person to make decisions relating to the design and planning of model railroad trains. There are 3 major concepts that train lovers need to think about as they get started in this hobby. These concepts include the scale, the theme, and the display of the model trains.

First, the overall theme is the most important decision. Selecting a particular theme encompasses making decisions on the purpose of the railroad. The setting such as the era and location needs to be defined, including whether it will be general or specific. The type of locomotive as well as the railway cars needs to be identified as it will be used in the layout. These decisions are important and have to be made since they will set the foundation for building the design and overall layout.

The scale is another decision that one has to make. Scale in this context stands for the ratio of the model’s measurements in comparison to the measurement of the actual train. In simple terms, it refers to the size of the model trains that a person needs. There are a number of train scales that are available that are very popular. Selection of the appropriate scale will depend on the amount of space available, the available funds one is willing to spend, the desired scenery one would like to create, and the type of locomotive and rolling stock needed to support the theme among other factors.

The display forms the third aspect that a person needs to decide on as this will form the platform on which the trains will operate on. The displays vary from the large, complex layout to the miniature switching layout that can be placed on a shelf. Other consideration for selecting the displays include reasons for construction of the model, availability of help in constructing the model, and the use of the model display after completing the set up. There are additional factors that might limit the display such as time, space and availability of money.

All the above information will assist a person with all the necessary information that is needed in order to get started with this hobby. Anyone can engage in this hobby regardless of their experience. Once a person engages in this hobby, he or she will be rewarded with countless hours of enjoyment and pleasure.

Should I choose Bachman Branchline or Hornby?

I’ve always been interested in the OO guage model railways but i’m finding hard to decide which brand to go for. I do realise that if i use hornby locomotives, i can use bachmann rolling stock but i find it hard to decide which one to buy.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

My husband has a garden railway G gauge, and always buys Bachmann, they are the best on the market. He even buys online from Brooklyn USA.
Hornby I believe is cheaper and easier to get hold of.
