Have you ever wondered why you learn some things faster than others or reject or don’t acknowledge a gap in learning?
Have you ever wondered why one teacher you had in school was better than any of the others?
When you learn, there’s a process to how you learn. This is called the ‘Conscious Competence Learning Model’
It’s made up of the following stages:
Unconscious Incompetence
Conscious Incompetence
Conscious Competence
Unconscious Competence
Unconscious incompetence suggests that a) the person is not aware of the existence or relevance of a necessary area of learning b) the person may deny the particular usefulness and the significance of learning.
This is crucial.
Teachers can assume that students are already at the conscious incompetence level – that is students are aware of their possible deficiencies and are seeking assistance by taking a course (body of knowledge).
However, as it often happens, especially applied to business owners and professionals (because at this point) certain actions have become independent of thought (like getting into your car and driving to your place of business) – there might be areas or gaps that have opened up as a result of doing these actions the same way.
Let’s take the example of driving further. Advanced driving techniques such as winter, or advanced defensive driving shows while sitting at a red light to be acutely aware of what is around. Is it a 4 way stop-light? Is it at a railroad crossing? Are you checking your mirrors every 2-3 seconds? How many cars are behind you? Beside you? Is the person approaching a little too fast? What are your options if you’re stuck at a red light and someone isn’t slowing down – where can you go? In other words – no complacency.
When things become too automatic, too routine it’s very easy to develop bad habits. Such as not greeting customers or talking on the phone when buying customers want to buy (go to any mall and you’ll see what I mean).
In the next article we’ll talk about ‘conscious incompetence’ and what this means to you as a business owner and professional.
