Some model railroaders prefer to assemble a model train layout in modules rather than building a big layout. The great benefit is that a modular train layout can be dismantled and reassembled if you decide to shift property. Constructing a modular train layout can save you from building a brand new layout all over again. This is really advantageous if you rent a home, or change residential locations frequently, which is something a lot of people do.

A modular train layout has other benefits over a regular railroad layout. A modular layout can be readily disassembled for displays at model railroad shows, shopping malls and conventions. A modular system can be displayed to the public, for those who would otherwise get to see and experience the fun and excitement of model trains. Nearly all immovable train layouts are only seen by a few invited guests, who go to your house, or visit an open day at your model railroad club to see the trains in action.

Making a modular train layout is frequently cheaper than other forms of railroad setups. They often have less in the way of mountains, hills and structures, as these features can be big and complicate the removal and transfer process. If cleverly designed, the modules can be set up exceptionally quickly, ready to operate in another location.

There is no need for a modular train format to be simple or boring. With considered planning you can take advantage of the available layout space to give the best operational appeal. A modular layout commonly takes a reduced amount of space too. So that can be a big advantage for anyone who is pushed for space when building a model train layout.

However, be aware, there are some disadvantages in building a modular train layout. There is a constraint to what bulk can be easily relocated, even if the layout consists of mobile modules. To save disappointment, both bulk and mobility should be considered when building layout modules.

A modular system can also influence the type of model railroad setup that can be easily modeled. It is generally accepted that point to point switch layouts are by and large more suitable, but not everyone wants this style of railroad operation. So, you really need to think carefully about exactly what you want to achieve before starting work building your model train layout. You will need to decide whether or not it will ever need to be moved, or whether is will remain in one location forever.

Remember too, that anything that gets moved around might be predisposed to damage. For this reason all scenery and structures on a modular train layout should be built to survive travel.

The other thing you must to think about is; how you will relocate your modular setup? Will the weight and size of each module be easily lifted and carted by 2 people? If you seriously think you are going to carry it on your own, then you should take this into consideration when calculating the weight and mass of each module.

In summary; modular train layouts are an excellent idea, especially for anyone with space restrictions for building a model railroad setup, or of those who will at some stage want to relocate their layout. And, when you think about it, that is probably nearly every model railroader. Because, like it or not, most of us move house at some stage. Also, even if you don’t want to construct a complete modular layout, it might be worth building it in manageable sections that could potentially be disassembled at a later stage.
