N Scale Ho Scale

Train Set owners … what is the O scale, N scale, G scale, HO scale, etc.?? ?
We want buy a ream of under our Christmas tree and I noticed that are listed under the "scale" does this mean? Is it size? If size range so what would be appropriate for under a tree?
